although being raised to always subscribe to this thinking, you’re right in that it’s still a struggle to take the steps to make those big purchases, especially when they cost so much initially. however, i also have to remind myself that it’s a privilege that i can do this now - i know many that due to the unfortunate cycle of poverty can’t afford to this

Absolutely, it is most definitely a privilege. I still buy a lot of my clothing second hand as prices can get crazy! It takes a lot of pre-planning & budgeting.

100% - and quality is also better for your body (a lot of fabrics aren't breathable and can cause issues). The other side is that sometimes you have to invest more in care, but ultimately, I think it's still worth it for all those reasons and it's more environmentally friendly.

I think it was hard for me to detach from the mindset of equating cheapness with frugality. In my teens I bought a lot of fast fashion because I grew up without money and figured that high quality clothing was something only rich people could buy. Now in my mid 20s, working in a job where I'm surrounded by wealthy teens, I see how a value-based is instilled into them by their upper-middle class parents. Its so important for young people to understand the value of fashion, so they don't end up thinking £6 for Primark "cashmere blend" socks with 95% acrylic and 5% cashmere is a good deal
